Carter County is the 88th county that was formed in Kentucky.
Carter County was named for Colonel William Grayson Carter, State Senator 1834-1838.
Carter County was created from Greenup and Lawrence Counties.
Carter County was noted in early years for five iron furnaces.
Carter County clay products industry developed in the late 1800’s.
Carter Caves, a major source of salt peter during the War of 1812, has been an important tourist attraction since 1924.
